Jail for Drink Driving Kiefer Sutherland

Kiefer Sutherland has started his jail sentence of 48 days after he was arrested and charged for a drink driving conviction.

Sutherland, 40 was caught driving while under the influence in September.  After the test revealed that he was more than twice over the legal limit, he said “I am very disappointed in myself for the poor judgment I exhibited recently, and I’m deeply sorry for the disappointment and distress this has caused my family, friends and co-workers,” he said.

He will have to serve five years of probation as well as pay a fine of $510 (£251) and enroll in an alcohol education class for 18 months.  Weekly alcohol therapy sessions also have to be attended for up to six months.

Sutherland will spend his time in a jail cell that measures 3m by 2.5m and holds 2 beds, a toilet, washbasin and a water fountain.  Although this will not be ‘crowded’ for him as he will not be having a roommate.

Duties will likely be confined to the kitchen or laundry rooms.  Visitors of 2 a day are permitted and he will be allowed the use of an outdoor area.

This is not the first time that Kiefer Sutherland had been stopped by police while driving.  He was found to already be on a probation order for a drink driving arrest back in 2004, which was brought to light when he was pulled over for making an illegal U-turn after leaving a night club in September.

Drinking and Driving

As the UK gears up for the party season, the annual THINK! Drink Drive campaign, which is now in its 30th year, will swing into action to warn motorists about the dangers of getting behind the wheel after even just one drink.

The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and the Department for Transport (DfT) are joining forces in their campaigns to get the warning out to potential drink driver’s young men in particularjust how seriously they are taking this issue and to remind them that drivers could face the toughest penalties in Europe.

During the Christmas period more people are stopped and giving breathalyser tests than any other time during the year.

Head of Nottinghamshire’s Police Unit, Chief Inspection Andy Charlon said "Every year, thousands of people's lives across the country are devastated by the actions of drink drivers. Over the Christmas period, the temptation can be to think that 'just one more' isn't going do any harm if you're driving, but it can. Not only can it mean you lose your license if you're stopped by one of my officers, but it can make all the difference to your reactions when you're driving.

"We will be carrying out random breath-tests on drivers we suspect are breaking the law, and targeting repeat offenders to see if they're still drinking and driving. We'll also be conducting 'morning after' tests, so if you've had a ’few too many’ the night before, you should consider getting a lift, taking the bus or going into work a bit later."

Despite the campaigns and harsh penalties being imposed, drink driving still occurs across UK and within all age groups!  It is more noted within young men where 36% of them who were tested and failed where 17-29 years old.

Nobody wants to be a ‘bah humbug’ and stop the partying, but remember before you take that first glass of alcohol that you need to trust your senses before you start drinking!

It is your responsibility to get yourself home safely and in a way that nobody else can get hurt – book a taxi, nominate a driver, get on a bus or socialise at home!

Don’t ruin yours, or anybody else’s, Christmas……….or life!!!
