Red Wine can Help Type 2 Diabetics
Latest research shows that red wine could possibly help type 2 diabetics and age related diseases.
US Drug maker Sirtris Pharmaceuticals said “The excitement here is that we’re not talking about red wine anymore. We’re talking about real drugs”
David Sinclair who is an associate Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School went on to further say “This is the first time that real drugs have been designed to go after diseases through the genes that control ages”.
Scientists have been inspired by a compound called Resveratrol found in wine and grapes to create chemicals that may one day treat type 2 diabetes.
Chinese researches reported back in October that Resveratrol curbs insulin resistance in mice, which is a hormone that controls the blood sugar and insulin resistance, can lead to type 2 diabetes.
There are almost 170 million people worldwide who suffer from diabetes and reports indicate that this figure could well rise to 354 million by 2030. Type 2 diabetes is found in 90 per cent of diabetic’s sufferers and through diet and exercise can be controlled without the need of daily insulin injections.
Researches at Sirtris have been looking for drug compounds that mimic the effects of Resveratrol, the chemical that is found in red wine and this been shown in studies to prolong the life of mice and reduce the advancement of age related diseases.
Sirtris Pharmaceuticals plan to begin human testing in early 2008 Sinclair said.
He went on to say “The chances of success in humans are estimated at 80 to 90 per cent. We will know next year depending on when the company gets the go-ahead from the US Food and Drug Administration to begin the clinical trials.
Anti-Ageing Diseases
Other age-related disease that the new drug could help is Cancer, Heart Disease and Alzheimer’s.
Red wine, we have been told, in moderation can be good for us. Claims that it is good for the heart when taken with meals has been thought for some time now, as well as reports of anti-cancer chemicals and helping us to keep slim!
No doubt we will now all await the publishes results from the trials about to take place next year and hope the scientists will find this new ‘all doing, all healing’ drug that can help us with age-related diseases and finally have something proven that it ‘really’ is good for us!
On that note, I am off to buy a bottle of red wine – Cheers!
